You Are the Main Character: How to Build a Brand That’s Worth Watching

Main Character Syndrome

There’s been a running meme on the internet about “Main Character Syndrome.” Main Character Syndrome is essentially when a person believes they’re the center of the universe, can only see things from their perspective, and feel the need to insert themselves at the center of everything, to the detriment or dismay of others. We see it often, particularly on social media and even in daily life. But, here’s the thing…. You ARE the main character; and that’s a GOOD thing. In fact, it’s a great thing.

Every Brand Needs A Story Arc

Your life experiences are the plot of your movie. Everything you’ve been through is a scene. It’s the journey from one starting point to another. The good, the bad, the ugly, it’s all part of your story.

Your values, your growth, the lessons you’ve learned; that’s your character development. Every adversity you overcame, every mistake you made, every time you got back up better than before, those are the things that make you real. The things that make you human.

Your costume, set design, and soundtrack is how you present yourself. What’s your personal style? How do you dress, move, speak? What does your environment and the places you frequent look like? What music aligns with your energy and represents your vibe? These are all important things to think about.

You’re not just the Actor, You’re the Director

You choose where to point the lens and what to focus on in your life. Do you want to waste it focusing on other people’s businesses, building other people’s dreams, consuming their content; making them the star of your movie? Or will you be the star of your own feature film?

It’s not just about what you focus on, it’s also what makes it to screen. You can edit your movie, to give people the best version of your movie, with you as the star. You curate the experience that you want your clients, customers, and viewers to see.

You define the tone and genre of your movie. Is it a comedy, action movie, or an epic, inspirational hero’s journey? You have to be in control of your narrative, your positioning, and telling your story.

Build A Brand With Cinematic Energy

Use storytelling as your strategy to let people know where you came from, what you’ve learned, and how you plan to implement those lessons to get where you want to go.

You have to design your “trailer.” How do you do that? Well, a movie trailer gives viewers a glimpse of what it will be like to experience the film in all its cinematic glory.

You give people a glimpse every time they come across you; whether that be your social media profiles, pitches, offers, website, landing pages, or content.

You need to be building a brand and creating content that builds trust and connection with your audience.

Real Life Example

I remember moving to D.C. and not knowing anyone there except for my family. One of my goals was to make a name for myself on the creative scene there, but as a complete stranger to the area, I had to find a way to differentiate myself in the market.

I ended up meeting a couple friends who were producers and they were supporting a friend at an open mic, so I showed up with my camera to photograph the event.

I took a lot of pictures, connected with a lot of people, got their information, and sent them their photos the next day. That built credibility and likability.

The next week, I showed up with my camera again, but I also brought a CD to perform. That immediately raised eyebrows. People were like “Hold up, the photographer’s about to rap?”

Yes, yes I was.

That made me unique in the market and I became known as the rapper who not only could make music, but also take high quality photos, shoot video, etc.

I took that foundation and years later it led to me building a personal brand that got me in Forbes Magazine, The New York Times, doing a TEDx Talk, and helping hundreds of people launch their businesses and personal brands.

In Conclusion

I encourage you to not just be the star of your movie, but write the script, cast your co-stars, and set the picture perfect scene, the life you want to live and the brand you want to promote to the world.
